Fancourt Montagu

Classic parkland course framed by Outeniqua Mountains; consistently ranked among SA’s Top 10.

Fancourt Resort: South Africa’s Premier Golf and Leisure Destination

Located in the heart of South Africa’s stunning Garden Route, Fancourt Resort is renowned as the country’s premier golf and leisure resort. This 613-hectare estate, framed by the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, offers a blend of modern luxury and classic elegance.

Golfing Excellence

Fancourt boasts three world-class golf courses, all designed by Gary Player and ranked among the top 20 in South Africa. The Montagu and Outeniqua courses are two of the 18-hole facilities available, with the Montagu being the older and more celebrated of the two. Originally part of a 27-hole facility when Fancourt opened in 1992, the Montagu was substantially upgraded by David McLay Kidd in 2004, adding 430 meters to its length and introducing new holes. This parkland course is known for its superb conditioning, fast-paced firm greens, and challenging par 4s, particularly the third, sixth, and seventh holes, which exceed 400 meters from the Protea back tees.

The Montagu course underwent further improvements in 2018, overseen by Gary Player, to enhance playability and maintain its traditional parkland look. These upgrades included resurfacing the bent grass greens, increasing fairway landing areas, reducing bunkering, and making water features more visible.

Rankings and Accolades

The Montagu course has been consistently ranked among South Africa’s Top 10 courses for over 20 years and was once ranked No. 1 by Golf Digest in 2001. It has also been recognised by CNNGo as the World’s 9th best golf resort.

Overall, the Montagu course at Fancourt combines exceptional design, beautiful scenery, challenging play, and top-notch facilities, making it a unique and highly regarded golfing experience.

Facilities and Activities

Beyond golf, Fancourt offers an extensive range of leisure activities. The resort features a world-class Health and Beauty Spa with treatments inspired by the four elements, a gymnasium, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a Jacuzzi, and tennis courts. Guests can also enjoy running and walking trails, bird watching, and fishing in the resort’s dams on a catch-and-release basis. Complimentary tennis racquets, balls, and fishing equipment are available.

The course boasts a world-class warm-up and practice area with a full-length range and a chipping and bunker practice area. Golfers can also hire golf carts, and the course mandates the use of caddies to ensure a steady pace of play. The halfway house is included in the green fee, and marshals monitor the pace of play to ensure rounds are completed within 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Accommodation and Dining

The Fancourt Hotel provides luxurious accommodations with 115 rooms, including classic rooms, luxury rooms, and suites, all equipped with modern amenities such as air-conditioning, satellite TV, and wireless internet. The resort features four restaurants, each offering a distinct dining experience, from organic and healthy meals to seafood, grills, and global fusion cuisine.

The Montagu golf course at Fancourt in South Africa is distinguished by several unique and appealing features that make it a standout in the golfing world:

Design and History

The Montagu course was originally designed by Gary Player and later substantially upgraded and redesigned by David McLay Kidd in 2004. This redesign included the addition of two new holes (the par-4 first and the par-5 ninth) and an extension of 430 meters to the total course length[2][6].

Course Layout and Conditioning

The Montagu is a classic parkland layout with 18 holes, par-72, featuring tree-lined fairways, challenging bunkers, and natural water hazards. It is renowned for its superb conditioning and fast-paced firm greens, making it a strong championship course. The course includes several memorable holes, such as the sixth and seventh par 4s, which are over 400 meters from the Protea back tees and feature a river that flows through the property.

Aesthetic and Environmental Features

The course is a visual treat, with broad holes framed by attractive vegetation, trees, and gardens set against the backdrop of the Outeniqua mountain range. Water hazards, sweeping elevation changes, and beautiful landscaping around the tees and greens contribute to its picturesque appeal. Features like stone walls bordering ponds and flowering lily pads add to the course’s aesthetic charm.

Challenges and Strategy

The Montagu course offers a challenging yet enjoyable round of golf suitable for players of all skill levels. It includes several daunting par 4s, particularly holes 13-15, and a drivable par 4 at the 16th hole. The final holes, including the par-3 17th and par-5 18th, require precise shots over water, making the finish highly memorable.
